While most consumers are driving and continue to drive gas vehicles, there are some companies, including GM, that would hurry the transition to electric cars. However, there are some issues with the adoption of electric vehicles. Currently, electric vehicles have a limited range of only three to four hundred miles, and they take much longer to charge than it would otherwise take to fill your car tank with gasoline. Once ranges can be extended and charging time significantly sped up, they will be considered more practical. The important question is, how far away are we from fixing these issues? In this blog, we'll be looking at different battery technologies currently in development, how close they are to being implemented, and the potential challenges each has that must be overcome. more Lithium batteries Unsurprisingly lithium-ion is the most common battery used in electric vehicles today. They are essentially scaled-up versions of the batteries found in consumer electronics. Instead of using a single unit like the one in your smartphone's battery packs, electric vehicles are made of thousands of lithium-ion cells. Those batteries give them a much greater capacity to provide enough energy to operate a large vehicle. Lithium batteries have a much higher energy density than traditional lead-acid or nickel-cadmium ones and are not only able to hold a larger charge but have a longer life span too. While you may be familiar with lithium as being the lightest of all metals, lithium-ion batteries don't actually contain any metal and instead contain lithium ions which can be manipulated to store or release the charge within the battery unit. There's a positive electrode normally made from a lithium compound, a negative electrode made from graphite, and a liquid electrolyte material that fills the rest. When an electrical charge is added to the battery, lithium ions move from the positive electrode to the negative one. Then when energy is released from the battery, they move in the opposite direction. Cons of Lithium Batteries: There are problems in using a battery of this design, the most dangerous of which is the risk of overheating, exploding, or even catching fire under certain circumstances. Electric vehicle manufacturers have had to invest heavily in developing features to reduce these dangers, making them safe for use on the roads. Features like including cooling mechanisms to regulate the battery's temperature help improve vehicle safety. Still, it will always be an ever-present risk because they contain liquid elements that undergo frequent temperature changes during regular operation. Another issue lithium batteries present is their usable life. In phones, for example, you only expect the battery to continue functioning for a year or two before its maximum charge cycles have been met. This only becomes a bigger problem when you make larger versions. Currently, most electric car manufacturers offer a guarantee that the battery will continue to work effectively for a minimum of eight years. Current estimates suggest that they should last between 10 and 20 years, but they will at some point need to be replaced. Of course, this has implications for the vehicle's resale value as it ages, but there are even bigger concerns for the waste this will produce. After trying to improve the situation for the environment by using an electric vehicle in the first place, the last thing you want to do is create batteries that will eventually end up in a landfill. Usability problems with lithium batteries are that they will always have a relatively limited range, and there's very little that can be done to increase the speed at which they can be charged. So while they're certainly suited to short-distance journeys, those who drive more than a few hundred miles at a time will be faced with extended charge times of up to an hour in some cases. That's a hard sell when traditional combustion engine vehicles only take a few minutes to refuel. There are, however, two other promising types of battery technologies that will eventually pass lithium-ion for vehicles of the future. Hydrogen Fuel Cells You may have seen that hydrogen-powered cars are already available, like the Toyota Mirai. While they aren't yet as prevalent as lithium power, they offer several advantages that mean they will likely become a viable alternative once enough infrastructure is available to operate them. From a user's perspective, they work similarly to gas-powered cars, which is one of their greatest advantages. The vehicle's tank is filled with liquid hydrogen, which is fed into a fuel cell with oxygen. The reaction that takes place within the cell converts the chemical energy contained within the hydrogen to mechanical energy to operate the car. The only waste product created in the process is water vapor. With the ability to refill a tank in just a matter of minutes and with a far greater range than lithium vehicles can offer in a single charge, there are several obvious benefits of using a hydrogen-powered car. Cons of Hydrogen Power There are, however, several disadvantages too. Not everyone is convinced this is a feasible technology for mass adoption, and various improvements will need to be made before large-scale use is possible. The first thing that needs to be addressed is simply the cost of building hydrogen fuel cells in the first place. For example, installing the required infrastructure, gas stations will need to offer pumps that dispense hydrogen—fuel, which will require a massive investment upfront. A particular concern is whether hydrogen-fueled cars have the energy credentials that consumers expect from an electric vehicle. They use, for example, an estimated three times as much energy to operate as lithium cars do for each mile driven. The energy that must come from somewhere and liquid hydrogen production is somewhat controversial. It's an element that doesn't exist in its liquid form in nature, so it must be manufactured, and more than 95 percent of the hydrogen created is done from natural gas. This means that fuel production releases just as many greenhouse gases and potentially even more than a traditional combustion engine. The technology is essentially moving the problem from one place to another. There are other ways to produce hydrogen, such as the electrolysis of water but this is currently so cost-intensive that it's nowhere near being realistic. For everyday use as fuel for a vehicle, demand for hydrogen would have to significantly increase to make it worthwhile. There's an element of a gamble involved in this technology. It is uncertain if zero immission hydrogen will become a thing or if companies like Toyota are willing to heavily invest in such a gamble. Solid-State Batteries Probably the most exciting development for electric vehicles is the solid-state battery. While not ready for mass adoption, solid-state will be a complete game-changer when it is. Samsung is currently leading the way with numerous companies jumping on board. By reinventing how a battery is made, engineers believe the range of an electric car can be doubled compared to its lithium alternative. Solid-state batteries have actually been in use for a long time in small devices such as pacemakers and RFID tags, but currently, it's impossible to recharge them. What's new is that they've designed a way that allows the movement of the ions within the battery to be reversed, which is needed to add extra charge to them. They've done this by changing the electrolyte used inside the battery. In lithium-ion batteries, the electrolyte is a liquid, while in a solid-state battery, the electrolyte is solid. This means the battery is the same power at about half the size. So manufacturers will have the option to double range or half battery size to reduce weight. For the most efficient vehicles, this could mean a range of up to 600 miles or more on a single charge, making most trips viable without having to schedule an hour to recharge midway. As a further advantage, researchers at Samsung also claim these batteries will have a longer usage life than Lithium-ion. They expect them to be able to be recharged more than 5,000 times before needing to be replaced. This gives each vehicle an operating life of more than a million miles before significant maintenance is required. They take up less space, but they're also far more stable and don't have a significant fire concern. Without the extra cooling surrounding them, solid-state batteries weigh significantly less. Solid-state batteries are safer because they don't contain any liquid parts, so even if they're punctured in a crash, there isn't the same risk of being further injured from their contents. Larger vehicle manufacturers have said that they see solid-state batteries as the future of electric vehicle technology. Toyota just announced a pretty major update on their solid-state battery technology. Solid-state isn't quite ready to be incorporated into designs on a mass scale, however, and probably won't be for several years. Researchers are still trying to find the perfect atomic and chemical compositions for the solid electrolyte that can deliver enough power for the reliable operation of a vehicle. In addition, the batteries that are on the market are still far too expensive to produce at a mass scale for commercial use. The most likely outcome is that solid-state batteries will first enter the luxury end of the market on vehicles that cost upwards of a hundred thousand dollars. However, once they've been proven to be effective and desirable, costs will eventually fall and become attainable within the price ranges of most consumers. With such attractive battery technologies on the horizon, the future of the automotive industry is undoubtedly electric. This is everything you need to know to get up to speed on the Chevy Suburban. more First-Generation 1935-1940 Suburban is the longest-lasting moniker in American automotive history. It's like if Ford still had a Model T. I'll do my best to breeze by the early, low horsepower bits that happened before your grand-pappy was just a glimmer in your granma's eyes, but I'm not going to skip it. It was the early 30s, and the middle of the US had a big bowl of dust on its hands. From 1930 to 1934, Chevy quietly put station wagon bodies on their full-size truck frames for private use. Private, meaning outfits like the National Guard, and the US Military, you ever heard about 'em? Support the Troops. As these big, long, covered trucks are coming off the line, some dude at Chevy was like, these things are pretty useful; maybe we could make one for the public. Some sort of backwoods, family, and possession transport vehicle. Why not call it the Suburban Carryall? The Suburban Carryall had its Chevy Truck papa's rugged full-size frame, and from its station wagon mama, it got a sleek body, windows, and plenty of seats, and it came out in 1935. You may know that GM was in the habit of sharing designs between their companies back in the day, and the boys over at GMC were like, "Hey, can we borrow your backwoods, family, and possession transport vehicle?" And Chevy was like, "Sure." So in 1937, both GMC and Chevrolet had the same car with the same name. Second Generation - 1941-1946 During WWII, Suburbans were used as military transport vehicles, and soldiers got to likin' 'em. So after all that warin' overseas, GIs came home, buying houses and making babies. But, of course, many of them wanted to load those families into the big Suburbans they got used to in the war, so Chevy gave 'em what they wanted with the third-gen Suburban in 1947. Third Generation - 1947-1955 Look at those curve fenders and sweeping lines. This gen Suburban was the inspiration for the 2011 HHR. The greatest-looking car of all time. Ok, no it was probably the worst ever but you didn't hear that from me. Fourth Generation - 1955-1959 Through the 50s and 60s, the Suburban got beefier and more capable, just like my grandpa, but it also had some intense competition. Jeep and the Ford Bronco started to siphon some business from the Suburban, so GM responded by making it more off-road capable. But they were faced with a decision. Fifth Generation - 1960-1966 Would they slim down the Suburban so it can compete with the new brood of off-road fun machines? No, let's make it bigger! So they did. The 'Burban got over a foot longer in 1967. Sticking to their guns worked. Just 6200 Suburbans were produced in 1967, and by 72, that number had grown to over 27,000. As is the custom with such great sales, Chevy and GMC decided it was time for a new generation of the 'Burban, and it would be the best yet. Sixth Generation - 1967-1972 The seventh-gen Suburban debuted in 1973 and would last for almost 20 years. This is the Suburban that would define Suburbans for most Americans. You could get it with the legendary Chevy small blocks or the beefy 454 under the hood when it came out. It was tall and aggressive and screamed, "I know what the heck I'm doin', now get the frick out of my way, you fence!" Seventh Generation - 1973-1991 By the mid-80s, the Jeep Cherokee and Toyota 4Runner were changing the game, and the term SUV first entered the automotive lexicon. But, lucky for Chevy, the hardy, capable Suburban was ahead of the game. By 1984, Chevy and GMC were cranking out almost 65,000 Suburbans a year. Remember, aside from minor changes, this model had already been out for over a decade. The world could not get enough of this oversized, outdoorsy, sports vehicle people hauler. So finally, after 20 years, it was time for a new look. And GM handed the task to their established designer Chuck Jordan. Chuck was known to design cars that embodied the era they were designed. The '59 Caddy, the Buick Reatta, this Oldsmobile 98. He'd later do the Chevy Cavalier. All of them are competent designs, but none of them are very exciting. Why choose someone so vanilla? Military and special forces loved the Suburban for many reasons, but one of those reasons is that it's not flashy. It blends in as much as something can, as massive as it is. But when you need to stand out, Caravan four more black 'Burbans, and nobody is gettin' in your way. Eighth Generation - 1992-1999 If you see a hoard of black Suburbans, you know something is going down. These vehicles are also reliable and easy to work on all over the globe, thanks, in part, to GM's worldwide parts supplier network. They're everywhere, and they're durable. There are stories of dudes driving through hostile territories and taking fire in these things but making it safely out in a Suburban riddled with bullet holes. Do you know who else likes being awesome and traveling in an entourage? Celebrities. The beefy Suburbans came with luxury options and had plenty of room inside for friends and business partners. Biggie Smalls was in one when he got shot. Rest in Peace big poppa. He used to love it when I called him that. Ninth Generation - 2000-2006 In 2000, GMC figured it was time to rebrand their Suburban as the much fancier Yukon XL, and the Chevy Suburban soldiered on as though nothing had happened. It did start to get a little more comfortable to drive when it was loaded up with high tech, load-leveling auto ride and rear leveling suspension. Chevy leaned into the rugged off-road image and unveiled the legendary Z71 package in 2001, which featured a front skid plate, off roadin' tires, a unique grill, runnin' boards, and Z71 stamped everywhere! They also had available Quadrasteer, which means all four wheels steer, which helps when your vehicle is over 18 feet long. And families love Suburbans. They're not for everyone, but we all had a friend whose mom or dad hauled them around in a Suburban. 2007's 10th generation Suburban took inspiration from the Tahoe and was redesigned with more modern, less boxy styling. It had a fantastic, aerodynamic shape and a steeply raked windshield angle. It also got even bigger, growing almost half a foot in length. Tenth Generation - 2007-2014 (This is the Diamond Edition) In February 2010, for the Suburban's 75th birthday, Chevy unveiled the 75th anniversary trim level, the Diamond Edition. Chevy embraced the luxury SUV market and decided they would kill it with this one. This immense, beefy beauty had white diamond exterior paint. It had standard 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, remote starting, adjustable pedals, and leather upholstery with heated/cooled front seats. Yes, Hip Hop moguls and special ops would still drive their blacked-out Suburbans, but now Mariah Carey could have one too. Eleventh Generation - 2015-2020 (This is the Midnight Edition) That brings us to the 11th generation Chevrolet Suburban, introduced to the public in September 2013. Chevy introduced a plethora of special editions, including but not limited to the Texas Edition. A little thank you to the lone star state 'cause more Suburbans are sold in Texas than anywhere else; it is also where they are made. The Texas Edition featured a trailer package, advanced suspension, all-wheel drive, big old wheels, and an exclusive Texas Edition badge. What could be cooler than Texas Edition? Only the most best special ops-inspired vehicle of 'em all, the 2017 Chevy Suburban Midnight Edition. I want you guys to do an exercise with me right now. Close your eyes, imagine the blackest black you can think of; you got it? Wait, you can't read while having your eyes closed? Nevermind. The point is the Midnight Edition is blacker than that! Twelfth Edition - 2021-Present (This is the Z71 Trim) Finally, we are caught up. The 12th generation Suburban was released in 2021. Based on the same GMT T1XX platform as the Silverado 1500, the Suburban got a major overhaul. With an interior that makes most luxury brands jealous and an exterior that got even more rugged-looking, the newest Suburban only expanded its lead over its competition. With GM bringing a Diesel option in the form of a 3L, 277 hp, and 460 lb-ft of torque, the newest Suburban can pretty much do anything your truck can. 2021 also reintroduced us to the Z71 trim level with an updated bumper, skid plate, and beefy off-road tires. Personally, it is my favorite Suburban offered. Over ten decades and 12 generations of vehicles, four generations of humans have learned the Suburban is unrivaled in a class it created. The C/K models span four generations between 1959 and 2000. So what is the difference between the C and the K series trucks? About eight letters. more It was the drivetrains. The C was rear-wheel drive. And the K was four-wheel drive. Chevy C/K trucks were trusty steeds and were well-loved by anyone who made an honest living hauling heavy payloads: ranchers, farmers, fishermen, race teams, farm farmers, fish racers, etc... In the late '70s, Chevy introduced the name Silverado as a trim level of their third generation C/K truck. It was a bit classier with chrome trim and a snazzy interior but maintained the offroad ruggedness that earned the Like A Rock reputation. By the early '90s, them boys 'n girls at GM realized that the landscape of the American truck market had changed. Imported trucks had created a new small truck market through the '80s. And Chevy knew that they had to go one of two ways with their new truck line. Smaller and more fuel-efficient? Or bigger and more manly? So what would they do? They already had the tiny S10 pickups, so they went bigger! Chevy doubled down with the Silverado and decided that while the other guys were all chasing their tales making little baby trucks, they would position the Silverado as the workhorse against which other's workhorses would be measured. In 1998 through the 1999 model year, a bigger, badder Chevy truck, the Silverado, finally made it onto the scene. The Silverado was setting a new standard for trucks. It was bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter. The Silverado 1500 got better gas mileage than the F150, made more power than the Dodge Ram, and could tow more than either of them. During this generation, the top of the food chain, the large adult son of the Chevy truck lineup, was the 3500HD which stands for Heavy Duty. And get ready, all you diesel nerds, here's the thing you've been waiting for. Duramax! The 3500 Heavy Duty was powered by a 6.6L Duramax diesel V8 and cranked out 360 horsepower and 650-pound feet of torque. This big boy could tow almost 17,000 pounds and haul around 5,000 pounds in the bed. But what if you don't need to haul heavy stuff? What if the only thing you need to haul is you and your crazy friends around? Enter the Chevy Silverado Super Sport, a 345 horsepower beast powered by Chevy's 6L LQ9 V8. It came with a four-speed automatic gearbox, all-wheel drive, and had an aggressive four-ten gear ratio for basically burnouts. It was a burnout truck. By 2006, it would come with more cool upgrades like performance suspension, 20-inch wheels, and even a limited edition Intimidator SS, which I will talk about - right now. Dale Earnhardt was one of the winningest race car drivers in American history. The very sight of Dale in the rearview was enough to make you quiver with fear. Catching a glimpse of that legendary mustache intimidated the competition into submission, thus the Intimidator. In 2006, five years after Dale's tragic death, Chevy honored his memory with the Intimidator SS edition. This sport truck only came in Onyx Black and had a whole bunch of sick appearance upgrades like a rear spoiler on a truck, headrests emblazoned with an image of Dale winning against a big E, and Intimidator badges all over. Handling was improved. It had bigger anti-roll bars with the locking 3.73 diff in the back. You know what that means, right? Big old smoking burnouts with both tires spinning! Do it for Dale! I really liked this guy, and everybody should go watch a NASCAR race. At least once. As fun as race-inspired trucks are, they're not the reason most people buy trucks. Most people who buy trucks, buy trucks because they're rough and ready work doers. And that brings us to perhaps the most iconic Silverado there is, the Z71. I know you've seen the iconic Z71 badge. I'm about to tell you cute, little babies what it means. Originally, Z71 was just an internal code for an options package. The Z71 package came with upgraded Bilstein shocks, skid plates, and an offroad-ready locking rear diff for ordering purposes. To GM's complete surprise, the Z71 sold like hotcakes. And why wouldn't it? The fact that the most purpose-built version of Chevy's most purpose-built truck further proved that when you wanted a real truck workhorse, you got a Chevy. Chevy had also been running their Like A Rock ads for over a decade. And by 2004, I guess they figured they'd made their point. Chevy's new umbrella slogan for all of their vehicles was- Chevy Silverado, an American Revolution. And they tried to expand their market share. Chevy offered the Silverado as a hybrid in 2004, dubbed- the Silverado Hybrid. The Silverado Hybrid was also the first mild hybrid that used an electric motor to help with starting up, charging batteries, and powering accessories. So, it wasn't really one. The second generation Silverado was everything the first generation was and more. It debuted in 2007 and got a more plush, more upscale interior, with a revised exterior, smaller panel gaps, and tighter lines. It sat atop an entirely new frame and completely revised suspension. The new frame improved body stiffness by a massive 92%, a bigger transformation than Christian Bale going from The Machinist to The Dark Knight in under a year. The new 6.2L, 403 horsepower Vortec V8 was now available to make the new truck faster and haul more lbs. The new, sleeker body design offered better fuel economy, which was getting more important while America entered the Great Recession. Speaking of fuel economy, you can finally get a six-speed automatic transmission, a much-welcomed upgrade over the previous gen's dog of a four-speed. Welcome to the 21st Century, Silverado! Chevy aimed to make it even better. 2014 saw the introduction of a brand new Silverado after the second gen's seven-year run. The third generation K2XX Silverado came on the scene with updated bodywork, a better grill, bigger wheel arches, and a host of new trims and engines. What else were you expecting? It's a Chevy. For the third-gen Silverado, GM did away with the Vortec family of V8s and introduced the Ecotec V6s and V8s. They made more power, baby! With this generation, Chevy made a bunch of changes that increased the strength and dropped the weight of the new Silverado. They used aluminum in the hood, engine block, and massive control arms to save weight. Ask your grandpappy if he ever thought the hood of a Chevy truck would be made out of aluminum. And he'd say, "Who are you?" This was also the first time the Silverado had a model with high luxury, high spec, and high class. The High Country came with a beautiful leather interior, all the amenities you could want, and because it's a Chevy, special badging! The biggest development with the third-gen Silverado was the massive amount of special editions. Whoo boy, were there special editions. There was the Texas edition, Alaskan edition, Rally edition 1, Rally edition 2, Blackout edition, Midnight edition, Midnight HD edition, Custom Sport edition, Realtree edition, Redline edition, Special Ops edition, and High Desert edition. I think that's it. It was all kinds of trucks for all kinds of people. In 2019 Chevy debuted the fourth generation, T1XX Silverado. It has an even more aggressive front end, more muscular wheel arches, Robocop-inspired headlights, and a healthy mix of engines. This one is also the first time Chevy has put a 2.7 liter turbo under the hood of a Silverado. This turbo four-cylinder engine gets as much as 22 pounds of boost. This little puppy cranks outs 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. Just like before, if you've got a pulse, they got a Silverado for you. And don't lament the loss of the Z71 package because they still got two of them, the Trail Boss and Custom Trail Boss. The Trail Bosses have a lift, offroad tires, and of course, a skid plate. And it doesn't stop there; the old Duramax diesel V8 gives you 910 pound-feet of torque through a new Allison ten-speed. For 2021, the Silverado saw relatively few changes. Most notably, the Silverado 1500 offers the newly named Multi-Flex six-position tailgate, which is borrowed from the GMC Sierra, and the introduction of wireless CarPlay and Android Auto projection capability. In addition, 2.7L 4-cylinder and 3.0L Duramax diesel-equipped Silverado see increased tow capacity ratings and new towing technology, including a jack-knife alert and trailer length indicator. New for the 2022 model year is a 13.4-inch Infotainment 3 touchscreen infotainment system that is standard on all Silverado 1500 models except for the Work Truck and Custom trims, as well as a new fully digital instrument cluster. Base model (Work Truck and Custom) trucks will retain the smaller infotainment system screen and instrument cluster from the outgoing pre-facelift Silverado 1500. An all-new ZR2 model will be the most capable model in the Silverado 1500 lineup and will include a standard 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 gasoline engine. Silverado 1500 models equipped with front bucket seats will also offer a center console-mounted shift lever for the first time.
