The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss is a surprisingly affordable option if you need a full-size work truck. Our Trail Boss Customs are $3,000 off MSRP and start at $50,265. With used car prices still crazy high, this $3,000 often makes it cheaper than a used alternative with thousands of miles already driven.

The fourth generation of the Silverado 1500 Trail Boss has been updated for the 2022 model year and is now even more enticing than the already impressive 2021 model. The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss delivers on looks and affordability as the mid-tier trim of the seven-trim lineup. This crew cab pickup truck retains the same ethos of the older model years while adding quite a few changes to make it a better value for money proposition.

This 2022 model has a new, updated front fascia, making it look more macho and masculine. As a result, the road presence is superb. Multiple new optional packages and features are onboard too. Here are 10 things you need to know before buying the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss.

10 Impressive Performance And Towing Capability

The Custom Trail Boss trim can be equipped with three different motors. The base 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-4 motor produces 310 hp and is not the best for long hauling applications. There is also a 3.0-liter Duramax diesel inline-6 motor. However, we would recommend the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8, producing 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. It comes paired with a 10-speed automatic and a 4WD drivetrain as well. This full-size truck could easily tow a maximum of 9,100 lbs when equipped with the 5.3-liter V8 motor, making it as good as its rivals in this regard.

The performance and torque are more than adequate to tow easily. We also love the meaty mid-range torque on offer, making it pretty effortless to drive. The truck sounds great and feels refined too. The 10-speed automatic offers quick gearshifts without losing any smoothness. However, you could also get the optional 6.2-liter V8 if you could go for the further upgraded ZR2 trim.

9 Ride Quality

The independent front suspension setup and the solid axle rear suspension setup with ladder frame chassis are standard in the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss giving above-average ride quality for the segment.

That quality does suffer when it hits the larger potholes at higher speed, and the overall traveling experience feels like what you would expect from a truck. However, given that the Trail Boss is designed with off-road use in mind, highway driving is surprisingly enjoyable.

8 Pretty Refined For A Pickup Truck

Refinement has seen a drastic rise for this fourth-generation model compared to the previous generations. With superior sound-deadening materials and thicker glass all-around, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss turned out to be even better in this regard. As a result, the road noise and wind noise aren’t too bothersome at high speeds.

Even with the mud-terrain tires from Goodyear, we found the Silverado 1500 Trail Boss to reduce the noise effectively. The cabin doesn’t rattle or squeak when met with sudden potholes at higher speeds, and the suspension works pretty silently too. The V8 motor is supremely refined and offers a sweet exhaust note on the highways.

7 Brakes Offer Excellent Bite

The braking hardware remains unchanged for this 2022 model from the older model years, and all the braking features come as standard too. With a 4-wheel disc brake setup with 13.5″ front rotors and 13.6″ rear rotors, the brakes are pretty sharp in terms of initial bite, and the braking progression is excellent too.

Even with a heavy curb weight of 4,826 lbs the truck doesn’t lose its stability under hard braking. ABS does kick in when required, and the truck offers enough confidence to the driver with great feedback via the pedals. The torque converter automatic does help with engine braking too. All these help provide a 70-0 mph braking distance of 181 feet.

6 Interior Is Spacious

The cabin space has never been a problem with any of the Silverado 1500 Crew Cab trims, and the same is the case with this Trail Boss trim. The standard vinyl cloth seats are very comfortable, and the front seat passengers have ample headroom and legroom. They are well-bolstered and offer excellent under-thigh and lower back support too.

Even the rear row is spacious enough to seat three adults with utmost comfort. The transmission tunnel isn’t intrusive, either. The soft opening multiflex tailgate on offer with the Silverado 1500 Trail Boss is a boon, and accessing the cabin is easy. Even though there is no bed lining as standard, the 62.9 cu ft of space, multiple hooks, LED lights and charging ports are.

5 Macho Exterior Design

The Trail Boss trim of the Silverado 1500 has always stood out from the lower trims due to its bulky front end and black accents for the massive front grille. This 2022 iteration is no different, and we also loved the all-new front fascia offered with this full-size truck. The seven exterior colors and a long list of options helps in personalizing the ride too.

The front gets the highlighting red tow hooks and the unique Chevrolet branding across the grille. The 10.8″ ground clearance and the impressive width and height make it even more handsome than the lower trims. The 18″ high gloss alloy wheels, mud-terrain tires, and neat badging rounds off the side profile. The rear end gets chrome badges, LED taillights, and a dual exhaust system.

4 Doesn’t Come With Many Safety Features

Being a mid-tier trim of the lineup, do not expect the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss to come with all the bells and whistles in terms of safety and driver-assistance tech. As standard, this full-size truck gets forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, reverse camera, tire pressure monitoring, and OnStar services.

If you want features like automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam headlights, you need to opt for the optional safety package. Nevertheless, the build quality is pretty solid, and the truck received 4-stars in the NHTSA crash test and a good rating in most of the subsections of the IIHS crash test.

3 Infotainment System

The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system with a 7″ touchscreen display that does duties in many other Chevrolet products comes unchanged with this trim. Even though we wished this truck came with the updated 13.4″ infotainment system offered with the higher trims, the 7″ system is pretty decent for the segment. It is reasonably intuitive, and the display quality isn’t bad.

All the needed connectivity and entertainment features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, Bluetooth, voice recognition, Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity, and a 6-speaker audio system are standard. The audio quality will not impress audiophiles; however, it does just fine for the regular Joes.

2 Competitive Warranty

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss offers one of the most competitive warranties, especially for a full-size pickup truck. It gets a limited warranty cover of 3 years or 36,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of 5 years or 60,000 miles. There is complimentary first-year maintenance as well.

The Chevy also received an overall consumer rating of 82 in the JD Power survey, with an excellent score of 83 in the quality and reliability section. This was quite similar to Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan.

1 Cabin Design Stands Out

While the infotainment center didn’t see a massive change in the Silverado 1500 Custom, some small tweaks and improvements add up to a better experience overall. We love the full-black color combination of the cabin coupled with silver accents and rubberized materials on the common touchpoints, making it look decent for a work truck. The infotainment system is also neatly stacked to the center of the dashboard.

The center console is reasonably spacious, and the wide front and rear armrest is a boon during road trips. On the Silverado 1500 Trail Boss Custom, there is liberal use of hard plastics, but the tried and true interior has proven to be a workhorse. If you are interested in the updated interior with the new 13.4” screen, we have them available as well.
